• Welcome! Bienvenido! Wilkommen!

    Welcome to Mrs. Engbarth's website!
    Welcome

    Have you ever seen these abbreviations and wondered what they mean?

    Basically, all of these are ways to refer to the same thing: studying English for those who did not learn it as their first language. The two terms we most commonly use in South Dakota are ESL or EL.

    EL = English Learner
    ESL = English as a Second Language
    ELD = English Language Development
    ENL = English as a New Language

    In the ESL room, we work on our English language skills through Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Along the way, we learn the grammar of English sentences and paragraphs, and build up our knowledge of words through academic vocabulary.
