• One Book, One School
~ a unified journey based on the love and learning of literacy

  • Starting April 18th, Parker School will be embarking on a unified journey based on the love and learning of literacy.  This special expedition is an all school book club called One Book, One School. Thanks to a generous gift from our ABC club, each family here in the Parker Schools will receive a copy of the same book, Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.  We are asking for your support and efforts in promotion of literacy in our district, by reading this book with your child, or all of your children as a family at home.  One Book, One School will be a memorable event not only in school for the next number of weeks, but also in your houses, and across the community of Parker.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. It is also a fun and worthwhile family activity. With the One Book, One School program, we aim to further build a community of readers at our school. Everyone- students, parents, teachers, office, cafeteria, bus drivers, day care, and custodial staff will be participating so we can all reap the many benefits of the program.

A special school-wide assembly will introduce the program and the book.  Your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive and active listening as well as a number of activities throughout the coming weeks in their classroom. You will soon find out that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Throughout the school there will be various activities which will further enrich the reading experience. You will want to make sure that your family stays current with the reading so that your child can fully appreciate all that we have planned. Events to look forward to in conjunction with our One Book, One School adventure include a kick-off assembly on April 18th, building of a mistake tree, growing and planting a garden at school, and a culminating party at the end of the school year.

With your help, we hope to make the next six weeks a time in which everyone is excitedly talking about the adventures of Opal and Winn-Dixie.

    Happy Reading!
